What is Shoplifting?
Shoplifting - officially known as retail fraud - is the illegal act of taking possession of an item(s) without paying for it. A shoplifting can result in severe criminal penalties such as jail time and fines in addition to a damaged reputation that can haunt you for the rest of your life.
At The Aggressive Criminal Defense Law Firm, we understand how important it is to mount a thorough and spirited defense against shoplifting charges. We focus on minimizing the exposure our clients have to legal and personal damage, and strive to resolve these issues as discreetly as possible.
The time to act is now if you are facing retail theft charges. Call us today toll free at (888) 461-7744 for a free initial consultation. We have office locations in Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids and Paw Paw.
What are the Penalties for Shoplifting in Michigan?
Criminal penalties for retail theft vary depending on the value of the items that were subjected to theft:
- First degree: Assets valued at $1,000 or more. Penalties up to five years in prison and $10,000 in fines.
- Second degree: Assets valued between $200 and $1,000. Penalties up to one year in jail and $2,000 in fines.
- Third degree: Assets valued at less than $200. Penalties up to 93 days in jail and $500 in fines.
First-time offenders are often able to avoid jail time if their cases are handled correctly. This is critical because offenders with retail crimes on their record face more severe penalties as a repeat offender. We pursue all means of protecting the criminal records of our clients. Whether a negotiated settlement is in your interest or your case proceeds to trial, we have the skills and resources to achieve the best possible outcome.
